This is the first of Mieville's books for me. In retrospect, I would highly recommend reading the New Crobuzon series in order. I am just starting no. 1 "Perdido Street Station" and it defines a lot of things that you have to guess about if you jump in with the Scar, as I did.
The series of 3 books take place on a different world, with early 19th century level of technology, sailing ships, some steam engines, no wireless or wired communications. But they do have airships and submarines. Thee are many kinds of creatures, Cactus people and Mosquito people to name two. Lots of fantasies about weird science etc. The central character of "The Scar" is Bellis Coldwine, a woman who had studied and written a book on an ancient extinct language. She teaches one character to read, another to speak the common language. She loves books and gets a job as a librarian, and hunts for a rare lost book. You might say that she is a "Speech Therapist who loves books" (any resemblance to persons ... is purely coincidental). She has an amazing epic adventure.

Many reviewers criticize Mieville for his lengthy descriptions. "Enough!, on with the story!" I admit it was slow for me to get into the swing of the story, but once I did, I did not find the descriptions laborious at all. I enjoyed the book a lot.

I read this five years ago, and surprisingly it kept me interested until I finished it. Certainly not the fast paced and action-packed books I prefer, and I easily drop books which bore me, no matter how close to the end I am, but still a decent read, and now I can say I've read this guy. It bugs me to not be able to tolerate certain authors, so I try to read at least one book by the folks who try to make vague societal statements or suggest deep meaning, like this guy, Paolo whats-his-name, William Gibson and Neal Stephenson. Haven't found that one book by the last three yet but I'll keep trying. Anyway, this is probably the least painful of Mieville's works to attempt.
I'm torn, deciding how many stars to award this one. The plot is brilliantly constructed. Though not a sequel to _Perdido Street Station_, (completely different cast of characters) it does briefly mention the events of the earlier book having happened less than a year previously. _The Scar_ is more focused and the characters are more developed than in _Perdido Street Station_, but the prose is not as carefully polished and the story does not rocket along with such unrelenting intensity. _The Scar_ has plenty of tension, but it is intermittent; I didn't feel like I needed to hang on with both hands the whole time. Giving the characters more emotional depth means the reader can connect with them better, but there is also more opportunity to be maudlin. The ending is sweetly & perfectly poignant, but the climax (a scant 10 pages earlier) is labored & drawn out with dialogue that seems forced and artificial. There were some sex scenes, a few of which bordered on the gratuitous. Plenty of vulgar language and some thoroughly gruesome violence. My biggest problem was the setting The floating city of Armada, made of lashed-together ships accumulated from the world's navies over centuries of piracy ... it's inherently unbelievable. I realize it is a fantasist's job to make the absurd seem plausible - something which I KNOW China Mieville can do - but when Armada was introduced I felt it was forced upon me without adequate rationalization. The book doesn't have as much nautical lore as I would expect in a story that takes place almost ENTIRELY at sea, which gives the impression that Mieville didn't do a whole lot of research. (Maybe he did, but it doesn't show.) So instead of accepting the premise along with the thousand other impossible things in the book, the concept of the floating city really stuck in my craw.

Once you get past that, it's a really great story with lots of action, violence, steampunk and magic, a cast of interesting characters and an elaborate plot that will keep you engaged right up to the end. It just isn't _perfect_. So, 4 stars.
before you read the rest of this, do yourself a favor and read this book. in fact, i heartily suggest reading all the bas-lag stories by mieville. everyone one of them is like a little window, a window to a world that is beautiful and ugly tantalizing us with everything else there is to see, to know with what we've experienced so far. this story carries on shortly after perdido street station. if you haven't read that you won't be completely in the dark. you'll meet amazing people, see incredible places, witness utterly terrifying events and learn some of the expanded history of the world of bas-lag. through the eyes of the most useless and transparent main character, possibly ever. she's there, and is alive. and all these things happen around her. but she's there telling us the events, not taking part in them. while this is fitting considering her character and personality if you came into this book thinking her first person perspective would be that of the world saving hero, you'd be wrong. oh, so very wrong. but in the end, that's ok. she's not a hero. she, like most of us, is just a person. a rather cardboardish person. but everything else makes it so worth it.
Wow! Great way to build a world. The main character, Bellis, wasn’t very likable, but that fit with the story. A lot of points of view and a lot of reasons for what’s going on. I really enjoyed watching this story unfold. I’m not going to give you a synopsis because one comes with the main description. I’m just going to say China Mieville is an outstanding author who pays attention to detail. This is well worth the read.
