Indelible is so far my favorite in this series.

It begins with a BANG!

Sara Linton who's the town pediatrician and also the coroner is stopping by the police station to talk to her ex-husband Jeffrey Tolliver when two men enter the station and start shooting. A hostage situation ensues after multiple officers are either killed or hurt.

As the situation progresses at the station, we get to see Lena Adams getting ready to start her first day back as a police officer. It's also her birthday which she usually doesn't celebrate when she gets a call from Frank, her partner who tells her, she needs to get herself to the station ASAP.

While this is happening in the present, Karin takes us back to the past. To a time when Jeffrey first started dating Sara. They have been going out for three months when Jeffrey invites her on a trip to Florida. On their way there, Jeffrey decides to take a pit stop at his old town of Sylacauga. For Sara, this is the first time she's privy to knowing more about Jeffrey's past. She meets his friends and his mother and neither encounter make a good impression on her. Worse, a crime is committed and then the bones of a young woman are found in the cave Jeffrey and his two friends used to frequent. Soon speculations are flying and it's up to Sara and Jeffrey to find the truth.

Indelible had two good storylines which meshed perfectly by the end. We get a lot of information in regards to what made Jeffrey the guy he is now. One of the things I did like about him was that friendship matters to him. It was also nice to see that he did care for Sara. Nonetheless, I'm still on the fence about Jeffrey. One second, Sara is saying how much she loves his integrity and on the next page, he's making a mistake.

As always, I enjoyed Sara. She's still my favorite character. She smart, practical and self-assured.

Lena is still a lost cause. Why is she still in the novels? It makes no sense to me. She's a train wreck with little self-respect and a nasty attitude.

Indelible Grant County Karin Slaughter 9780060567118 Books Reviews

INDELIBLE, is a Grant County Thriller, Book 4, by Karin Slaughter. The book is written in the format of two back-and-forth stories. One takes place in the present; the other unfolds ten years earlier. Both cover the relationship of Dr Sara Linton and Chief of Police Jeffrey Tolliver. Narrating flashbacks effectively is a difficult technique for any writer. For the most part, Slaughter has done a masterful job in maintaining consistency and interest while employing this technique. On one of their earliest dates, Sara and Jeffrey visit his hometown and become accidental witnesses to a murder, then later stumble upon a skeleton, a potential second murder. In their present world, Sara and Jeffrey are in the midst of a heated discussion about getting their relationship and maybe even their marriage back on track when two heavily armed young men enter the police station. Minutes later they start firing indiscriminately leaving one officer dead, Jeffrey and another officer badly wounded and an explosive hostage situation with eight young children held as bargaining chips. Indelible is the fourth in the Grant County series. By now Slaughter has successfully established the personalities of the prime players. I am constantly surprised by Slaughter’s graphic but intriguing story-telling methods. It is hard to put one of her books down. In my opinion, Karin Slaughter is one of the top 10 mystery writers of our day. I recommend this book and all of Karin Slaughter’s thrillers. She won’t let you down. I give Indelible a strong 4-star rating.
INDELIBLE By Karin Slaughter
MY REVIEW FIVE STARS*****

I loved INDELIBLE, the 4th installment of the GRANT COUNTY BOOKS featuring Sara, Jeffrey, Lena, and several familiar supporting characters. I was tempted to declare that it was my favorite out of the first five books in this series (I have already finished FAITHLESS, the 5th novel). However, after some reflection, I just can't place INDELIBLE ahead of the darker, more sinister story that played out in the deeply disturbing debut BLINDSIGHTED. It is somewhat ironic that INDELIBLE is actually the PREQUEL to BLINDSIGHTED. I can now feel good about saying that BLINDSIGHTED (and its Prequel INDELIBLE) are my favorites of the six novels comprising the GRANT COUNTY SERIES.

The simple fact is, I haven't read a book penned by the sensational Slaughter that I haven't really liked. I was limited to listening to unabridged audio books in the past when I traveled and the cassette player (later CD player) was my best friend. Slaughter's novels became constant companions as I was covering the miles. The library carried several of the books featuring WILL TRENT, and thus I had "read" (for instance FRACTURED and at least of few others). It was because of this that when I bought a KINDLE in 2014 and was able to actually read again, I started from the beginning of the TRENT BOOKS and finished them all [except THE KEPT WOMAN].

It was only then that I started in on the much earlier GRANT COUNTY BOOKS that were in many ways building blocks that constructed a sound foundation for Slaughter's name and popularity to grow and flourish. I would advise ANYONE to begin at the beginning so to speak, which is the only way to truly savor the different character arcs and how their destinies later intertwine, their individual futures play out, etc.

So back to INDELIBLE, no one writes dialogue, turns a phrase, or creates real flesh and blood characters that you feel like could jump right off the page and be standing in your living room. Slaughter has created a soap opera in the small town of Heartsdale that is populated with fictional characters that you have learned to love, get frustrated with, or in some cases despise.

The beginning pages of INDELIBLE find Sara and Jeffrey pretty much at an impasse. Jeffrey want to remarry Sara, and that is just not in the cards from her perspective. The conflicting feelings that she has for Jeffrey have never been so strong and immovable. The catalyst that resolves the above stalemate between the two becomes a brutal assault on the police department by two strangers, dangerous young men who are not hesitant to kill innocent people. The two men are "armed to the teeth" and have pretty much a small arsenal at their disposal to hold the occupants of the station hostage. Quickly, we find Sara holding a seriously wounded Jeffrey, attempting to staunch the bleeding while simultaneously trying desperately to hide his identity as the Chief of Police. It seems obvious early on that the two killers think that Jeffrey was blown to Kingdom Come right out of the gate when it was in fact another officer that was shot and killed.

This seems a perfect time to insert a backdrop to the story of Sara and Jeffrey's romantic history together. How DID they manage to meet and fall in love? I was fascinated to start on that journey of knowledge. What we have are two parallel tales, and I believe that Slaughter was able to weave these tales seamlessly into a cohesive whole. The reader is transported back in time to long ago events as we take a road trip with Sara and Jeffrey to his small home town in Alabama. Jeffrey's friends, lovers, and family are exposed to Sara's clinical examination, and that's BEFORE the murder and mayhem, Jeffrey's apparent duplicity at the crime scene, the discovery of a second body that blows a cold case from Jeffrey's rambunctious
youth wide open.

We are transported back to the present horror of the police station hostage situation intermittently, and are riveted by the events that are unfolding. Initially Jeffrey is believed dead. Lena is back on the force. And to my absolute delight, the indomitable Amanda Wagner is the Hostage Negotiator that is flown in by helicopter from Atlanta to address the crisis. I never read book reviews prior to finishing a novel, but I noted in one editorial review that the critic didn't feel that of the two storylines, the hostage crisis took a back seat and got short changed. Basically, this was a minor criticism to the suggest that Slaughter may have gotten a little too ambitious. I disagree.
Imagine that you are on a train and the conductor is propelling you full speed ahead toward an unknown destination. But then who hasn't felt that way reading a Karin Slaughter suspense novel? The difference with INDELIBLE is that you are speeding along parallel train tracks with two plot lines pulling you relentlessly ahead with equal intensity toward an unknown conclusion at the end of the line.
In my opinion, Slaughter succeeds masterfully in pulling off this difficult task. This is not as easy to accomplish as one might imagine, and if you are an avid reader, then you know how many times that you have read a novel that attempts to keep you equally enthralled on two fronts, getting you knee deep in quicksand only to jerk you up out of the depths and plunge you headlong into the throes of the alternate universe that is designed to keep you equally engaged.
