This book was awesome!!!!The story was great! A Drunk Prince, A Young Wizard, and An Injured Thief must work together to recover the stolen stone and save the city. Its a classic adventure story. There was rarely a slow moment and I didn’t want to stop listening when I got to work. I often didn’t stop listening when I got home. Whats the audiobook equivalent of “I couldn’t put it down”?
The characters were great too! The trio was snarky and caring and each one of them was strong in their own unique ways. Their relationships were so realistic that you can’t help but fall in love with them. I don’t even know what to write! I just loved all three so much and I wish I was part of a tro like that.
I was worried that there was going to be a love triangle, since there were three main characters, but there wasn’t! There was still a little bit of a love story but it was subtle and it took second seat to the adventure, which was nice. I read too many books where the love story is the main plot. While there wasn’t a love triangle there was some points when the relationships were forming where I couldn’t figure out who was going to end up with who. At one point I was even hoping that they would end up as a thrupple because I didn’t want anyone to get their feelings hurt!
The book is great! I loved it! The Audiobook version I am not so sure about. The guy reading did really good men’s voices, but his woman’s voices were AWFUL! They were comically squeaky and it was a little hard to look past, but he still did a good job at bringing the characters to life. I loved all the characters and I wonder how much of that was the writing and how much of that was the reading. If I had to guess it is the writing but I don’t know for sure. Also, some of the transitions were confusing. Time would skip forward and it would take me a minute to realize it. I think that in the book they are probably marked somehow, maybe a paragraph break, but that would be hard to convey in an audiobook.
Overall I would totally recommend this book! It was great!

The Fire's Stone is the repetitive, vanilla lovechild of 'Gentlemen's Guide to Vice and Virtue', and 'Captive Prince'.
I would say it inherits their wry wittiness, has similar elements of adventure and danger, and a nice slow-burn 'will they, wont they', but it just doesn't have the same depth or follow through. The world building is okay...the author provides a lot of detail for some things and none for others. The character development is a little rocky. Some things I got slapped in the face with; Aaron needs to be alright with being bi-sexual. Darvish needs to stop drinking. Chandra needs to gain some humanity. But the more nuanced issues that the characters work through get muddy.
The third person omniscient is both satisfying and annoying. I love getting everyone's perspective in a novel, but in this, the author jumps around kind of wildly. To me, the relationship between the three MC's suffers for it. We hear so much about what they are thinking and feeling, but they actually communicate very little. By the end it left me wondering when they developed the bond they seem to have.
Everything has a place though, and it is the perfect book if you know what you want and what you are in for.
I had just read The Foxhole Court and needed a break before its likely more intense followup, The Raven King. I needed an neutral palate cleanser. Something fun, nice and easy to read that would give me a breather before I headed back to the dark, heavy-hitting novels I like to read. That is exactly what this book is.
I could not put this novel down. Unlike other gay-themed fantasy novels, this one has three protagonists. Although their development can be predictable at times, it is largely psychologically valid, and it is deeply moving. You really do end up feeling for each of them. The plot itself is less formulaic and more complex than the typical novel of the genre. I found only a couple of unbelievable or improbable occurrences, and they were negligible. The rest was imaginative and surprisingly astute with the occasional realistic detail that a lesser writer might not have made the effort to include.
The Fire's Stone doesn't have a very detailed magic system as compared to other contemporary fantasy books. The plot is interesting, but at the end of the book, I was left with a sense that not much happened. The writing is much more about the interpersonal relations of the three main characters rather than what they're doing in the world. I really liked that there were bi-sexual and gay relationships in the book that were handled very normally--by which I mean they weren't an oddity or treated as unusual in the book's setting. I also liked that the main characters are all from different races, and I really appreciated that the darker skinned characters were as commonplace as the lighter skinned characters.
